Cindy contacted me in June about making a t-shirt quilt using her son’s shirts from his days of cross country and track and field events. After she sent me the shirts, I saw firsthand the vibrant and energetic colors of the shirts. This track and field t-shirt quilt of memories would become a treasured quilt.
Work Begins
Having the similar sizes of logos, these shirts were relatively easy to put into a design. With only a few spaces remaining between the blocks, I could create a patchwork block to fill in. Cindy had told me the school colors included blue and gray, so I used these as the predominant colors.
Now what is a Bison doing in this quilt?
As I stitched on the sashing around the blocks, I kept seeing the words “Shaker” and “Bison”. And not only the words, but there was a shirt with a picture of a bison! As I make memory quilts, I like to know a little about the history of the shirts or even the person to whom they belonged. So off to the internet I go to research. Knowing Cindy is from New York, I easily found an informative page about Shaker High School. And you guessed it: the bison is the Shaker High School Mascot! A very fierce looking animal.
Work is complete
I enjoy doing long arm quilting, involving a quilt top made by a customer, or one made by me. I addition, I enjoy making memory quilts, from both clothes from loved ones, and t-shirt quilts representing years of wonderful experiences. Cindy’s quilt is complete and is an outstanding quilt. It is a track and field t-shirt quilt of memories and a beautiful colorful treasure. Cindy is planning to surprise her son with this gift, and I feel certain he will be thrilled.
