Susan’s Fall Quilt

My sister Susan Largen loves the fall season and is always excited about decorating with all her special autumn items.  Recently she ran across a quilt top that Mom had made in the late 1960’s- 1970’s, made with green and orange blocks.  She brought it to me and asked if I had any suggestions about what to do with it.   In contemplating that, the vision of Susan’s fall quilt came to mind.

Creativity at work

Imagining what I could do with this, and with an idea in mind, I asked Susan to go with me to my favorite quilt shop -Fork Mtn Quilting in Rocky Mount.  The store had recently obtained new autumn fabric, so we had a delightful selection.  Susan chose the beautiful plaid fabric for the border, with a rust-colored fabric to use as the binding.  For the backing, she found a lovely fabric filled with pumpkins.  I trimmed the quilt top down to throw-quilt size, squared it up, and added the borders.  For the quilting design, I chose a nice fall design featuring pumpkins and leaves and stitched it with rust-colored thread.

Completed project

The quilt turned out so pretty.  The choice of coordinating fabrics were the perfect colors, and the quilting design was great.  The rust-colored thread dimmed the impact of the orange and greens blocks of the quilt.  Susan’s fall quilt is a wonderful addition to the fall decorations.  Susan is pleased, and we both think that Mom would be so happy to see the completed quilt.  We took pictures of the quilt in Susan’s living room and even included a photo of Mom beside the quilt.
