Socks, socks and more socks

I have made many types of memory quilts – quilts filled with clothes from loved ones, t-shirt quilts to remember earlier years, or to celebrate special events, quilts in honor of someone, quilts with ties, handkerchiefs, and nightclothes.  And now I have had the unique pleasure of creating a quilt made of socks, socks, and more socks.

First contact

Amanda Derheim, from Minnesota, contacted me in March with this request: “  My son has a very large collection of unique socks. I would love to have them made into a quilt”. She later added:  “It has been a really fun collection through his high school years….people were always watching to see what his socks looked like! . . he has sooooo many!”  .

Work Begins

Before I received her 100 socks (one from each pair), I searched around our house, found an old pair of nylon socks, cut them, added stabilizer, and made a quilted block as practice.  It worked great. The rectangle blocks were cut from the tops of the socks, and the area between the heel and toes.

Final Product

As I worked on this quilt, I found myself wondering about each design.  They were so unusual and varied – from holidays, to locations, to games such as Monopoly, to foods, and endless other themes.  Did he remember who gifted each pair or the story behind each?    I think he will find this unique quilt filled with memories and I hope he enjoys it for many years.  Who would have thought a quilt of socks, socks, and more socks!!

Please, take time to look at the pictures closely to see many of the socks.
