I enjoy making t-shirt quilts. The subject matter is so varied from one quilt to another: memories of high school days, travels, concerts, shirts representing goals met, and quilts created as a gift. This throw-sized quilt fits the last category as I created Louise’s surprise t-shirt quilt for a Christmas present.
First Steps
In August, Louise brought me 9 shirts that had been given her by her son’s girlfriend Lori Compton. The shirts had such bright colors and were in excellent condition. I followed my usual process: take pictures of the shirts, create a quilt design on my computer, and get approval from the customer. I did create three versions of the quilt with different arrangements of the border colors. Louise quilted approved the design and my work began.
Quilt Completed
I used a bright yellow sashing for two of the shirt blocks and a vibrant royal blue for all the others. After stitching all the blocks together, I added a plaid multi-colored final border. This picked up all the beautiful colors in the shirts. This throw just pops with bright cheerful colors. Louise’s surprise to-shirt quilt is sure to have been a hit at Christmas.
