Barbara Mulholland contacted me in July 2024 with a request for a second memory, This one is for her son Kevin using his t-shirts. I previously made a lovely USMC memory quilt for her husband. Kevin’s special quilt was a wonderful project for me to create.
Background Information
Kevin is a 37-year-old man with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and is a power soccer athlete. He and his late father Chris started a team in 2005 called the Tidewater Piranhas. Kevin has traveled over the world and was a USA Power Soccer team member and played in Brazil.
Process of Quilt
The shirts were so bright and colorful and represented Kevin’s experiences with his team. After designing the first draft, I worked with Kevin and Barbara via email and texting, to come up with the final draft. Kevin is an artist and graphic designer and made changes in the order of the shirts to better represent his progress. His help was so wonderful deeply appreciated.
Creating the Quilt
Using the team colors of black and red, the sashings between the blocks, the fabric for the borders, and the backing coordinated well with the colors of the shirts. The backing was red and black mingled fabric. Kevin’s special quilt is beautiful. Barbara sent me a photo of Kevin wrapped up under the quilt, so I know he is already enjoying it.
