Jill Capp contacted me about having a memory quilt made as a surprise for her husband’s birthday. He was a marathon runner and had saved a t-shirt from each year’s event. Jill told me he often mentions that he needs to do something with his shirts. Jill was very exact on what she wanted and had great ideas about the design of the quilt. Jill’s secret memory quilt quickly became a fun project.
Plans
We exchanged emails, and texts as we planned and discussed this wonderful quilt. Jill had thoroughly researched all things pertaining to memory t-shirt quilts: types of designs; sashing around the shirts; types and designs of fabrics; borders; and even the most recommended type of batting to use. She searched online fabric sites and found a special marathon runner design on fabric for the borders, and lovely accent fabrics for the sashings.
Secrets
An important aspect of this quilt was keeping it a secret from her husband. When we texted, she was careful to wait until her husband was away from the house. And to keep from using their joint credit card, Jill always got cash back when she grocery shopped. She hid the cash at home, and then purchased a money order for the final payment to me.
Wonderful experience
In all our correspondence, her love, caring, and excitement about Jill’s secret memory quilt was evident. It was an honor for me to make this lovely quilt. I was delighted to receive a video of the family celebration when her husband opened his gift. It was evident that he deeply appreciated this thoughtful gift.
